BURSITIS - Health Information

What Is Bursitis?

All natural Recovery™ with Nutricol™ may help bursistis. Bursitis is a condition involving inflammation of the bursa that cushions the tendon between the tendon and the bone. Continual rubbing of the tendon over the bone, as in repetitive movements, can potentially cause enough friction to produce inflammation and pain. Compression of the bursa can also contribute to elbow, ankle, knee or heel bursitis, and hip bursitis otherwise known as trochanteric bursitis or shoulder bursitis. Bunions are also in this category.

BURSITIS SYMPTOMS

Bursitis symptoms may consist of anything from tenderness to stiffness in the localized joint. Pain typically accompanies the involved area as well.

Hip bursitis

Trochanteric bursitis is a common injury often seen in runners or athletes who participate in running-oriented sports (e.g. soccer, football, etc.). Bursitis and trochanteric bursitis are particularly painful and are often the reason for an athlete changing their sport or terminating their career.

CAUSES OF BURSITIS, HIP BURSITIS AND SHOULDER BURSITIS

  • Overuse or injury
  • Incorrect posture
  • Poor nutrition
  • Abnormal joint position
  • May occur in association with other diseases or conditions
  • Occasionally from an infection
  • Very often cause is unknown

What are the Risk Factors?

The most widely recognized causes of bursitis are repetitive or excessive movement of a joint/joints, and excessive exercise to which the body is unaccustomed. As the body ages, the blood flow to the tendons may be decreased. This diminishes the ability to heal and may initiate bursitis. Here are the most common bursitis risk factors:

  • Being overweight. Abnormal pressure is placed on the legs and feet in obese individuals.
  • Continually wearing poorly fitted shoes that are constantly rubbing against the tendons in the foot.
  • The presence of bone spurs in the foot/feet or in other areas that irritate the tendons.
  • Excessive use of the arm muscles, which can result in inflammation of the tendons in the elbow (“tennis elbow”).
  • Repetitive use of the wrist, causing inflammation of the tendons.
  • Excessive use of the tendons, which often occurs in the serving arm of tennis players, and in the shoulders of avid swimmers.
  • Being unfit. When you are in poor fitness condition, tendons can become weak.
  • Having an infection. Often, having an infection within the tendon sheath or bursa will create inflammation.
  • Having particular systemic illnesses such as systemic sclerosis, psoriatic arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, diabetes, hypercholesteremia, osteoarthritis, Reiter’s syndrome, and thyroid disease, which may increase the risk to develop bursitis.
  • Having incorrect posture. Excessive stress is put on the tendons when you have poor posture and use your limbs in an awkward manner.
  • Having a genetic predisposition. Development of defective connective tissue (eg. abnormal collagen levels) or decreased circulation increases when there is a hereditary connection. Conditions such as these can develop into to tendonitis. Pain and inflammation might not be apparent until the individual is middle-aged or when there is some degree of trauma in genetically weakened areas.

Wellness Tips For Bursitis

The following tips will help you manage the pain of bursitis:

  • Apply a hot and cold remedy. You can provide short-term relief of pain by applying heat or cold to the affected area. Heat will help reduce stiffness and pain, which will increase circulation to the area, and relax aching muscles. (Many health professionals believe that heat application will not be effective, and will only make the situation more painful, so use caution when applying heat. Cold will help numb the pain by blocking nerve impulses, and constricting blood vessels. Always use a towel or another barrier in between your skin and the source of cold or heat.
  • Keep active. Exercise helps protect joint structures and tendons, and keep them strong and healthy. Gradually increase the frequency and intensity of each activity, and always remember to warm up and cool down before and after all exercises.
  • Change positions regularly. This is especially important if you are seated for long periods of time. By changing your posture and position frequently, you will help reduce the stress on specific tendons. Try to take frequent breaks as well.
  • Position your joints carefully to avoid unnecessary stress on the joints. Use your arms, back and legs to avoid placing extra stress on your joints. For instance, carry any heavy loads near your body. While in the bathroom, use shower seats and grab bars to help you to avoid falls and conserve your energy. Use your larger and stronger joints to bear the burden of heavy loads. For instance, carry a shoulder bag instead of using a handheld bag. Avoid remaining in the same position for extended periods of time.
  • Wear shoes that fit correctly and support your feet entirely.
  • Adjust your diet. Include rawer seeds like flax and pumpkin seeds, as well as fatty fish such as sardines and salmon to your diet. These health-promoting foods contain omega 3 fatty acids, which reduce tendon inflammation. Eat more legumes (peas, beans), increase your fresh fruit and vegetables consumption, and reduce foods, which are rich in animal fats, such as fatty meats like beef and pork. Avoid foods that contain hydrogenated oils and any high-fat dairy foods.
  • Consult a doctor or healthcare specialist to learn about non-drug, food-based supplements. Recovery with Nutricol™ is specifically formulated to improve the quality of life.

TREATMENTBuy Now!

Treatment for hip or trochanteric bursitis and shoulder bursitis involves removing the cause of injury, addressing any outstanding infection or sometimes in extreme cases, surgery.

  • CAUSE OF INJURY: repetitive motion as in sports related injuries or jobs such as being a cashier must be curbed or stopped completely until the inflammation dissipates.
  • INFECTION: where there is pain, there is infection. This must be addressed for full recovery to be achieved.
  • SURGERY: after all other means have been exercised, surgery may be recommended as a last resort. Recovery greatly assists in the healing from such procedures.

Understanding Arthritis and Bursitis Medications

If you have been diagnosed with arthritis or bursitis, hip or trochanteric bursitis or shoulder bursitis your doctor will review the best course of treatment and pain management. This will likely include medication. Here are the most commonly used arthritis medications, and how they work.

Medications That Control Arthritis and Bursitis

Arthritis and bursitis treatment typically includes non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and analgesics (pain relievers). They help you to feel better by reducing the amount of discomfort that you experience but they do not inhibit the disease process itself. For this reason, they cannot prevent the damage associated with arthritic conditions, such as bone and joint impairment, hip bursitis or shoulder bursitis. These formulations typically take a few days to a few weeks to control pain effectively.

NSAIDs

Pronounced "ensayds,"these drugs are beneficial in reducing swelling and pain in joints and decreases stiffness. A small dose controls pain, but larger doses are necessary to reduce inflammation, and are frequently the first choice for bursitis pain relief.

The problem with NSAIDs is their side effects.

  • Taking multiple NSAIDs at this time enhances the probability of heartburn.
  • May cause severe harmful side effects such as bleeding and ulcers.
  • Potentially restrains the blood's capability to clot and may work against other blood-thinning medications such as Coumadin.
  • Kidney disease, a reported and possible side effect.

Most NSAIDs require a prescription, including naproxen (Naprosyn®), nabumetone (Relafen®), indomethacin (Indocid®), diclofenac (Voltaren®), piroxicam (Feldene®) and sulindac (Clinoril®). Other NSAIDs are available over-the-counter; these include ASA (Aspirin®, Anacin® and others), and ibuprofen (Motrin IB®, Advil® and others.)

These are a subclass of NSAID’s that have more recently been introduced to North America and include the following: Rofecoxib (Vioxx®), Celecoxib (Celebrex®), Meloxicam (Mobicox®), and Valdecoxib (Bextra®). Standard NSAID’s inhibit proper blood clotting whereas Cox-2 inhibitors do not but DO share the negative side effects, which include: kidney failure, heart attack and numerous cardiovascular complications.

*Important News Release September 2004
Vioxx®, the cox-2 inhibitor made by Merck, has been pulled from the market because of severe lethal side effects due to heart attack and stroke.

Acetaminophen

Buy Now!

Acetaminophen is sometimes known as Tylenol®, Panadol®, Exdol®.

  • It is not an anti-inflammatory drug
  • Usually can be safely combined with anti-inflammatory medication for pain relief (consult your doctor first)
  • May bring relief for bursitis pain, but does not address the underlying cause of this condition
  • Long-term use may result in kidney disease
  • Overdosing may cause liver damage

If you are combining acetaminophen for bursitis pain relief with over-the-counter medications such as cold and flu remedies, make sure that they do not contain enough acetaminophen to constitute an overdose.

Cortisone

  • May be injected directly into the joint to relieve severe inflammation and swelling
  • Mimics the anti-inflammatory effects of cortisol - a hormone produced naturally in the body
  • Cortisone injection provides almost immediate relief for a tender, swollen or inflamed joint
  • Can weaken cartilage and remove minerals from the bone (osteoporosis and osteopenia), they should only be used rarely
  • Chronic use may result in immune suppression and increase the risk of infection
