What Is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin disorder characterized by areas of red skin covered with scaly, silver patches, often referred to as “plaques”, which contain multiple layers of dead skin tissue.
The structure of our skin is consistently replenishing itself, and takes approximately one month to complete the process. After the new cells are formed in the dermis (under layers) of the skin, they travel towards the surface of the skin. During this process to the epidermis (outer layer) of the skin surface, they become hard (keratinized) and die. The cells then separate off and begin to flake.
With conditions such as psoriasis, there is an overproduction of skin cells, which results in a build up in the epidermis of the skin. But with psoriasis, the skin renewal process occurs within only a few days, whereas healthy skin cells normally replenish in one month.
Psoriasis typically involves:
- Scalp
- Lower back (sacral) region
- The extremities (especially the knees and elbows)
- Nails
- Armpits
- Buttocks
- Groin or navel area
- Eyebrows
- The penis in men
Psoriasis symptoms can range from mild to severe. In mild cases, some individuals aren’t even aware of the condition. The more severe cases of psoriasis are characterized by recurrent attacks followed by subsequent remissions, and usually affect large regions of the body. In severe cases, psoriasis medication and further treatment are required. It is important to note that inflammatory conditions such as psoriasis are not contagious.
How Common Is Psoriasis?
Although psoriasis can occur at any age, it most often affects Caucasian men and women between the age of 15 and 50. Ethnic groups are less frequently affected by symptoms of psoriasis.
What Causes Psoriasis?
Approximately one-third of psoriasis sufferers have a genetic predisposition where the skin cells begin to over multiply. This inflammatory condition is interconnected to the immune response. Psoriasis is aggravated by injuries or skin irritations such as insect bites, cuts, rashes, and burns, including infections like strep throat. Scaling of the skin may become extreme in individuals, with suppressed immune systems due to specific drugs, including chemotherapy patients, individuals with AIDS and autoimmune disorders such as arthritis.
As with an eczema condition, psoriasis may be preceded by digestive problems such as inflammatory bowel disorders like ulcerative colitis, crohn's disease, and diverticulitis. Irregular absorption of dietary reserves may be deposit into the bloodstream. Foreign compounds dispersed into the bloodstream aggravate immune hypersensitivity and can have an adverse affect on healthy skin cells.
Psoriasis development occurs for many reasons:
- Medications
- Obesity
- Bacterial or viral infections
- Excessive consumption of alcohol
- Friction or stress on the skin
- Too much or lack of sunlight
Psoriasis Treatments
Psoriasis treatment involves management of the symptoms such as reducing skin irritation and flaking and minimizing inflammation. Treatment for psoriasis depends on the severity of the condition, and the health, lifestyle and age of the affected individual.

Understanding Psoriasis Treatments
Topical Steroids
For psoriasis conditions, which are mild to moderate, topical steroid medications are most commonly used. Topical steroids prevent the accumulation of dead skin cells and help reduce itching and inflammation, therefore bringing psoriasis relief.
The side effects of the stronger cortisone preparations:
- Enlarged blood vessels
- Thinning of the skin
- Bruising
- Changes in skin color
-
Discontinuing these medications abruptly can result in flare-ups
-
Skin may develop a resistance to prescribed medications
-
Cortisone injections may be used as a last resort when treatment has not responded to other medications
Anthralin
Thick, stubborn patches affected by psoriasis respond well to this medication, although some individuals may experience irritation with Anthralin. There are new improved Anthralin formulas and techniques, which reduce the probability of experiencing negative side effects and provide some psoriasis relief.
Retinoids
Vitamin A is frequently prescribed for psoriasis symptoms either by itself or in conjunction with a topical steroid preparation. Pregnant women or women who are planning to become pregnant should avoid topical retinoids, as they can cause birth defects.
Vitamin D
Calcipotriene is a synthetic brand of vitamin D that can be helpful. Vitamin D sold in health food stores and drugstores has not proven itself to be effective in providing psoriasis relief.
PUVA
When this skin condition has not been responsive to other psoriasis medications or the condition is extensive, PUVA (named after the drug psoralen and UVA) can be effective. PUVA treatment is successful in approximately 85 to 90 percent of psoriasis cases. This method of treatment involves two stages. First, the individual takes psoralen, and then is exposed to a prescribed amount of a specific type of UVA (ultraviolet) light. This treatment usually requires more than 20 treatments consecutively for the best results. Maintaining control of the lesions usually requires up to 40 treatments annually. PUVA treatments can accelerate aging of the skin and freckles, and increase the risks of skin cancer.
Goeckerman Treatment
This psoriasis treatment was developed in 1925 by a dermatologist at the Mayo Clinic. This method of treatment involves applying coal tar bandages daily in conjunction with ultraviolet rays to provide psoriasis relief.
Methotrexate
When psoriasis has not responded to other treatments successfully, Methotrexate, which is an anti-cancer drug, is used as a last resort for psoriasis treatment. This form of treatment produces significant results. Liver disease is a serious side effect; therefore you may be required to have routine blood tests, chest x-rays and liver biopsies. Additional side effects may include nausea, stomach upset and dizziness.
Cyclosporine
Cyclosporine is a drug that suppresses the immune system, and is used when other treatments have not been effective. Cyclosporine can have a potentially damaging affect on blood pressure and the kidneys; therefore routine blood tests and close monitoring are necessary for individuals who have been prescribed cyclosporine.
Scalp Treatment
There are a variety of both non-prescription and prescription sprays, shampoos and oils, which contain cortisone or coal tar and are available through your pharmacist or doctor. Treatment for psoriasis on the scalp is evaluated and based on the severity of the symptoms, the person's health and lifestyle, and the length of hair.

Psoriasis Causes And Risk Factors
Psoriasis risk factors for children increase by 10 to 25 percent if one parent has psoriasis and approximately 50 percent when both parents have been diagnosed with psoriasis. There are numerous factors, both internal and external, which can have an influence on whether an individual with a genetic predisposition will be affected by this disorder.
Psoriasis Wellness Tips
Get regular sunlight. Regular exposure to the sun can help control the symptoms of mild to moderate psoriasis. However, over-exposure to ultraviolet light can actually aggravate psoriasis symptoms and increase the risk of skin cancer. Avoid staying out in the sun for long periods of time, which may cause you to burn.
Try not to scratch. Scratching the affected area will only aggravate the lesions and cause them to itch more increasing the risk of infection. You can help keep the air moist in your home by using a humidifier. It will help minimize itchy skin.
Remember to moisturize. Use a good moisturizer frequently during the winter when the cold, dry air depletes the moisture within the skin and causes psoriasis symptoms to get worse. If the skin becomes too dry, it can cause the skin to split open, increasing the risk of infection.
Take a relaxing bath. Have a warm water bath with unscented bath oils. Do not stay in for longer than 15 minutes. Use only unscented bath soaps and apply a mild moisturizer immediately after.
Add folic acid to your diet. Folic acid has significant benefits for psoriasis symptoms. Research suggests that individuals with psoriasis may be deficient in folate, therefore foods rich in folic acid is recommended. Folate, which is a B vitamin, is found in many foods such as asparagus, fruits, leafy green vegetables, peas, dried beans, yeast and liver.
Keep emotions balanced. Experiencing constant negative emotions can cause psoriasis to flare up. Using relaxation techniques can help you feel better, particularly if you are under constant stress.
Preventing Psoriasis Flare-Ups
Triggering factors that cause psoriasis flare-ups include:
Injury or irritation to the skin. Symptoms of psoriasis may get worse after some form of irritation to the skin, such as a scrape or insect bite, a burn, or following a rash. Therefore, it is important to promptly treat any rash or injury.
Drug interactions. Certain over-the-counter or prescription medications may aggravate psoriasis symptoms. These drugs can include beta-blockers, anti-malarial drugs, lithium and NSAIDS such as ibuprofen.
Changes in climate. Being exposed to a climate that is dry with little humidity for long periods of time can make psoriasis symptoms get worse. Many individuals experience some relief from their symptoms during the summer since there is an abundance of sunshine. However, other individuals can be sensitive to the ultraviolet rays and will experience a flare-up when exposed to the rays.
Infection. Infections such as strep throat may initiate psoriasis in young adults and children. People with psoriasis that develop strep throat must seek immediate medical treatment. Antibiotics will be prescribed, which can help prevent any further flare-ups.
Stress. Elevated stress levels appear to aggravate psoriasis symptoms and can create flare-ups in certain individuals. You can reduce your stress by incorporating calming technique such as walking, practicing yoga or meditating, which can help reduce psoriasis flare-ups.
